What does it mean to sit with Christ?

To help us discover what it means to sit with Christ, we must see where He is and what this means.

Watch closely the fact that by God’s mighty power He raised Christ and by grace made us sit with Him.

Then see how God is going to show His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

Ephesians 2:4–7 (NKJV) 4But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

  • The key to receiving God’s exceeding riches of His grace is discovered by sitting together with Christ.

Ephesians 1:17–23 (NKJV) 17That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, 18the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, 19and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power 20which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. 22And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, 23which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

This discovery demonstrates the awesome position and privilege that we have in this life in Christ.

We need to discover:

  • the hope of His calling.
  • the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints
  • the exceeding greatness of His mighty power which the Father worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead
  • Christ’s position at the Father’s right hand
  • Christ’s authority in that position
  • How all of that impacts the church

Everything that Christ accomplished has been brought down to our account.

  • It is His, but the Father has given it to us with Christ.
    • Without Him, we have nothing.
    • But, in Christ we receive it all.
  • We have the hope which is laid up for us in heaven, Colossians 1:5.
        • That hope is an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, Hebrews 6:19.
  • The riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints encompasses everything Christ has received.
        • There are two ways to understand this.
        • First, the saints are His inheritance.
        • Second, it means everything that the Father has given to His Son we will share as His Bride.
  • God’s power that raised Christ is exceeding great power.
        • His power is able to bring all this to pass.
        • God exercised and energized the greatness of His power when He raised Christ from the dead.
        • Then God extended that great power toward everyone who believes.
          • God does not depend on your ability to achieve this.
          • He does it by His own mighty power.
  • Christ has been seated at the Father’s right hand, far above all principality, power, might, dominion, and every name that is named.
        • First, this is a position of rule, authority, power and dominion that Christ has received.
            • The extent of this is far above every other.
          • Second, He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church.
            • The church is to share in His boundless dominion.
            • Make it personal.

God has raised you up to sit together in the heavenly places in Christ.

We need to discover the depth and richness of these benefits that are ours in Christ Jesus.

What do we receive since we are “raised and made to sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus?”

In the Old Testament, God made provision for His benefits.

Psalm 103:1–5 (NKJV) 1Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name! 2Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: 3Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, 4Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, 5Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

  • Consider then the depth of the present and eternal benefits that are made available in Christ Jesus.
    • This is your position of rest in Christ Jesus.

You have been invited to sit down in heavenly places in Christ Jesus and enjoy what He has achieved in His cross, resurrection, ascension and exaltation to the right hand of the Father.

    • He has made us partakers of His life, victory, and exalted position.
    • All of His benefits are ours in Christ Jesus.
    • He forgives all our iniquities.
        • In Christ, He abundantly pardons and makes us alive in Christ Jesus our Lord.
    • He heals all your diseases.
        • The provision for your healing is part of your rest in Christ.
        • He is the source of your healing.
    • He redeems your life from destruction.
        • In Christ, you are mighty through God to pull down strongholds.
        • Satan’s access is broken in Christ Jesus.

The exceeding riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus should be considered here.

Jesus gave a parable of the great supper.

Luke 14:17 (NKJV) He said to those who were invited, “Come, for all things are now ready.”

You have been invited to come and sit with Christ in heavenly places, for all things are ready.

  • We talk about heaven our eternal home.
    • Heaven is our blessed hope.
    • We look forward to the rest that we will have when we sit with Christ in that place.
  • These benefits in Christ have already started.
    • He is not just talking about sitting with Christ when we get to heaven.
    • He is talking about the present and eternal “sitting with Christ.”

Every benefit that Christ Jesus has gained in His victory is already being freely bestowed on us in Christ. (Ephesians 1:6-7)

“God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.” (Ephesians 1:3)

Do you understand the present reality that God has “made you sit in heavenly places in Christ Jesus?”

What does this mean?

  • How do we receive forgiveness of sins?
  • Why will the Father pour out the Holy Spirit on us?
    • Since Jesus died on the cross, your sins are forgiven.
    • Since He is exalted to the throne, you are given power from on high.
  • When you put your faith and trust in the finished work of Jesus Christ heaven’s resources are available.
    • There is no need for you to wait for salvation until you can merit it.
    • There is no need for you to wait for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

The invitation has been given, “Come, for all things are ready.”

  • God wants to show you “the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus,”

(Ephesians 2:7).

  • So, God says: “Come and sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” (Ephesians 2:6)

He has made this possible for you through Christ Jesus.

What happened to Christ Jesus has also happen to us in Him.

What then does this mean to us?

Galatians 2:20 (NKJV) 20I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

Romans 6:6 (ASV 1901) 6knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away, that so we should no longer be in bondage to sin.

  • Rather than constantly living in defeat, you can live in victory.
  • Sin does not have to rule your life.
  • You don’t have to be in bondage.
  • Since Jesus is free, you are free.

Ephesians 2:13 (NKJV) 13But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

  • God has brought you near.
  • You have been invited in Christ Jesus to partake of heaven’s best.
