The Anointing You Have Received

Before His return to the Father in heaven, Jesus made special provisions for the success of His church.

  • He told His disciples that they would be “endued (clothed) with power from on high,” (Luke 24:49).
  • Later, Jesus said they would “receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you,” (Acts 1:8).
  • This “receiving power” and being “endued with power” would equip and enable His church to live a different quality of life.
    • It would bring them into a higher fulfillment of obedience to the will of the Father.
    • It would bring them into a more open revelation of the things Christ said and the heart and mind of the Father.

The goal is evident in these words.

1 John 2:28 (NKJV) “And now, little children, abide in Him, that when He appears, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming.”

  • There are two points of reference.
    • First, you may have confidence.
    • Second, you may not be ashamed before Him at His coming.

We need to know how this is achieved.

1 John 2:20 (NKJV) But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things.

  • Pay attention to what he says.
    • “You have an anointing from the Holy One.”
    • This is not a temporary anointing.

1 John 2:27 (NKJV) But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.

  • What happens to the anointing that He gives?
    • “The anointing abides in you.”
    • Abides means: to remain the same over a period of time, cannot be moved, continues to be present.
    • This anointing is consistent and achieves a specific and accurate result.
  • This anointing is different than what many people presume.
    • The anointing which you have received “from Him” abides in you.
  • As the anointing abides in you, it does something.
    • The same anointing, not another anointing, teaches you.
    • What the Holy One has given remains consistent in you.
    • That anointing has instructive authority.
    • That anointing is true and produces constant results.
  • The anointing brings you to a deeper, more consistent life of abiding in Christ.
    • The anointing is associated with a revelation of Jesus Christ in us.
    • The anointing has a specific purpose of showing us how to successfully abide in Christ.

Watch these parallel statements of the anointing and the Holy Spirit.

John 14:16 (NKJV) And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—

John 16:13 (NKJV) However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

  • Do you see what the Holy Spirit will do in you?
    • His purpose is to produce by the anointing of the Holy Spirit the fullness of Christ in us.
  • The anointing that was upon and within Jesus Christ achieved a specific purpose.

Psalm 45:6–7 (ESV) Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. The scepter of your kingdom is a scepter of uprightness; you have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions;

  • The anointing that was on Jesus Christ was far beyond any other anointing.
    • No man has had more of an anointing of the Holy Spirit than Jesus the Christ.
      • He is the Anointed One.
      • The Spirit of the Lord was upon Him, Luke 4:18.
      • He was anointed above all others.
    • Jesus ministered in the power of the Spirit.
  • In Luke 4:18-19 He said, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me… to preach, …to heal… to proclaim liberty… to recover sight of the blind… to set at liberty the oppressed… to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
    • The anointing produced specific results in Him.

The anointing always produces specific results.

What is the anointing?

James speaks of a certain anointing with oil.

James 5:14–15 (ESV) Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

  • This anointing with oil produces results when it is accompanied with the prayer of faith.
    • This anointing with oil is symbolic of another anointing that accompanies prayer and faith.

The anointing that produces the result is power that flows out.

  • In Mark 5:25-34, the woman pressed through the crowd and touched the hem of Jesus’ garment.
    • As soon as she touched His garment, power went out of Him, (Mark 5:30).
    • This power or anointing is what many seek.
    • It is power for a specific instant need.

Luke 6:19 (ESV) And all the crowd sought to touch Him, for power came out from Him and healed them all.

Luke 8:46 (ESV)But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I perceive that power has gone out from me.”

    • This kind of power or anointing produces immediate and recognizable results.
    • The King James version refers to this power as virtue.
    • Virtue is a powerful anointing that performs a specific function.
    • This kind of anointing or virtue does not constantly remain.

The third anointing that is much preferred remains in you.

1 John 2:20 (NKJV) But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things.

1 John 2:20 (KJV 1900) But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.

1 John 2:27 (NKJV) But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you..

1 John 2:27 (KJV 1900) But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

  • This anointing is the result of the continued abiding presence of the Holy Spirit.
    • This is the kind of anointing that was upon Christ.
    • He was anointed with the oil of gladness more than His companions, (Hebrews 1:8-9).

Acts 10:38 (NKJV) says John preached: “how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.”

    • The disciples were witnesses of all things which He did.
  • Jesus testified of this in Luke 4:18.
    • He said, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me.
    • That anointing was filled with power to be and do.
    • That is the same Spirit and anointing that Jesus told the disciples they would receive.
  • After He commissioned them to go into all the world, He told them to wait in Jerusalem until they were clothed with power from on high.
    • Jesus wanted the church to be endued (clothed) with the power (anointing) of the Holy Spirit from God.
  • It is the same Spirit and anointing that is given to all who believe and receive.
    • This anointing of the Holy Spirit infuses the church with power, wisdom, and gifts of the Holy Spirit.
    • You have been enabled, entrusted, and empowered to accomplish God’s will.
    • The anointing enables you to pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers.
    • The anointing enables you to discern the truth.
    • The anointing enable you to be led by the Spirit.
    • The anointing brings righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
    • The anointing brings the overflow of hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

How can we get an increase of the anointing and power from on high?

First, have a greater revealed presence of God.

  • How can you gain a greater revealed presence of God?
    • Spend time waiting on God and seeking the face of God.
    • This is not something that we can rush into.
    • It is a result of staying in prayer, worship, and the degree of anointing that we have received until God’s presence and glory are revealed.

Second, that greater revealed presence of God brings a greater degree of glory.

  • Every born-again child of God has experienced a degree of the glory of God.

2 Corinthians 3:18 (NKJV) But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.

    • This is definitely a function of the Holy Spirit to take us into a greater revelation of God’s glory.

Third, the greater glory in the presence of God brings a greater anointing.

    • When you spend time in the revealed presence of God, a greater power comes into your life.
    • Jesus told His disciples that some demons cannot be cast out without their fasting and prayer.
    • It was no problem for Jesus to do that, because He had an open-heaven relationship with the Father.

Fourth, the greater anointing that comes from the glorious presence of God brings a greater manifestation of power.

      • With a greater anointing comes greater demonstrations of power.
      • When we live and operate under that greater glory, the anointing that abides in you is activated with greater power.
